The \textit{Bullettino di Bibliografia e di Storia delle Scienze Matematiche e Fisiche} (1868--1887), an example of the internationalisation of research (Q508122)

The article discusses nature and impact of the `Bullettino di Bibliografia e di Storia delle Scienze Matematiche e Fisiche', a journal exclusively on the history of mathematics and physics, which was founded in 1868 by Prince Baldassarre Boncompagni. Therefore, the author gives an overview of the journal's content, analyses publication strategies and highlights the exceptional role of its founder and editor-in-chief. Boncomgagni not only provided the press to print the journal as well as an impressive collection of historical manuscripts, he, furthermore, had a substantial influence on the type and style of the published contributions. Based on a great number of quotations from letter exchanges it is illustrated that the editor managed close relationships with various international researchers and had established a remarkable network of historians of science in Europe. In particular, the article focusses on Boncompagni's relations with the authors Gilberto Govi, Maximilian Curtze, Angelo Genocchi, Antonio Favaro, Moritz Steinschneider and Enrico Narducci and their contributions on Galileo, Copernicus, Domenico Maria Novara, on Lagrange's correspondence, on the letter exchange between Gauss and Germain as well as on astronomy and optics in Arab and Hebrew cultures. Hereby, the spectrum of publications was very wide, from comprehensive research articles to translations of manuscripts and comments on international debates. With many interesting cross-references and valuable comments of the historical background, the author brings structure to the rather different 20 volumes of the journal and illustrates its relevance for the internationalisation of the history of mathematics and physics.
