Multiplier Hopf algebras were introduced in [\textit{A. Van Daele}, Trans. Am. Math. Soc. 342, No. 2, 917--932 (1994; Zbl 0809.16047)] to describe the structure of the algebra of functions over a non finite group. The weaker notion of multiplier bialgebras appeared in [the authors, J. Algebra 423, 853--889 (2015; Zbl 1348.16026)] and multiplier Hopf algebras in a braided category were introduced in [the first author et al., Trans. Am. Math. Soc. 367, No. 12, 8681--8721 (2015; Zbl 1343.16029)]. These papers initiated a research program which here is continued. The algebraic properties of these objects are studied. The duality in their categories of modules or comodules is explored. The main result is the generalization of the fundamental theorem of Hopf modules, setting that the category of Hopf modules over a multiplier Hopf algebra in a braided monoidal category is equivalent to the base category, a well-known result for ``classical'' Hopf algebras.
