A complete list of rank two finite dimensional Nichols algebras of diagonal type over a field of positive characteristic \(p\) was presented in [the author and \textit{I. Heckenberger}, SIGMA, Symmetry Integrability Geom. Methods Appl. 11, Paper 011, 24 p. (2015; Zbl 1318.16031)]. In the present paper, the author studies rank three finite dimensional Nichols algebras of diagonal type. The main result Theorem 3.1 presents characterizations of the following property: the Nichols algebra \({\mathcal B}(V)\) corresponding to a 3-dimensional braided vector space of diagonal type \(V\) is decomposable and the set of roots \(\Delta^{[M]}\) is finite. One of the characterizations is that the Dynkin diagram of \(V\) belongs to an explicit list, that is presented in the paper. A separate list is given in the cases \(p=2\), \(p=3\) and \(p>3\). Using a result from [\textit{I. Heckenberger}, Algebr. Represent. Theory 11, No. 2, 115--132 (2008; Zbl 1175.17003)], this yields a classification of 3-dimensional braided vector spaces \(V\) of diagonal type with finite dimensional Nichols algebra \({\mathcal B}(V)\).
