Let \[ W_t(x,y)=\frac{1}{\sqrt{\pi}}\left(\frac{e^{-t}}{1-e^{-2t}}\right)^{1/2}e^{-\frac{(x-e^{-t}y)^2+(y-e^{-t}x)^2}{2(1-e^{-2t})}} \] be the kernel of the heat diffusion semigroup \(\{W_t\}\) associated with the Hermite operator. The area \(g\)-function associated with that semigroup is defined as \[ g^q(f)(x)=\left\{\int_{\Gamma(x)}\left|\left(s\frac{\partial}{\partial s}W_s(f)(y)\right)_{|s=t^2}\right|^q\frac{dt\,dy}{t^2}\right\}^{1/q},\quad x\in \mathbb R. \] As it is usual now in the harmonic analysis associated with the Hermite operator, other area \(g\)-functions associated with the Poisson semigroup and also for the Laguerre differential operator are defined analogously. \(L^p\)-boundedness properties of these functions as operators are studied.
