Let \(\chi\) be a crossed module with boundary \(\partial\) and \(\mathcal{M}(\chi)\) the category of representations over a field \(k\) defined by \(\chi\). It is known, see \textit{P. Bantay} [``Characters of crossed modules and premodular categories'', Lond. Math. Soc. Lect. Note Ser. 372, 1--11 (2010; Zbl 1210.18004)] that \(\mathcal{M}(\chi)\) is a premodular tensor category, but not always modular. In the paper under review, the authors show that \(\mathcal{M}(\chi)\) is modular if and only if \(\partial\) is a bijection, in which case \(\mathcal{M}(\chi)\) is equivalent to the representation category of a Drinfeld double. Furthermore, applying the modularization process of \textit{A. Bruguières} [``Catégories prémodulaires et invariants des variétés de dimension \(3\)'', Math. Ann. 316, No.~2, 215--236 (2000; Zbl 0943.18004)] they prove that the resulting modularization \(\overline{\mathcal{M}(\chi)}\) is equivalent to the category of representations of a crossed module \(\overline{\chi}\) with bijective boundary map and, therefore, to the category of representations of a Drinfeld double. To this end, the modularization functor is described as the induction functor with respect to the vacuum object \(\underline{\mathbf 0}\), a commutative special symmetric Frobenius algebra.
