Patterned after the definition of the upper limit of a net of sets in a topological space [cf. \textit{K. Kuratowski}, Topology I (1966; Zbl 0158.40802)], the authors introduce the concept of the upper limit of a net of fuzzy sets in a \(([0,1])\)-fuzzy topological space. This concept is used to characterize such known compactness-type properties in fuzzy topological spaces as quasicompactness [\textit{C. L. Chang}, J. Math. Anal. Appl. 24, 182-190 (1968; Zbl 0167.51001)], Lowen compactness, weak compactness, ultracompactness, \(\alpha\)-compactness, as well as to introduce new compactness-type properties by specifying a class \(\Omega\) of domains of nets under consideration. (Similar ideas in the crisp case appear in the paper [\textit{S. D. Iliadis} and \textit{B. K. Papadopoulos}, Publ. Math. 47, No. 1-2, 139-150 (1995; Zbl 0852.54003)]).
