    The paper deals with the boundary behaviour of a \(k\)-convex large solution (i.e. a solution which tends to infinity on the boundary of \(\Omega\)) of \[ S_k(D^2u)=H(x)u^p\qquad\text{in }\Omega, \tag{1} \] where \(S_k\) is the \(k\)-Hessian operator, \(p\) is a positive parameter and \(H\in C^\infty(\Omega)\) satisfies a boundary blow-up condition of the following type \[ C_1d^{-\beta}(x)\leq H(x)\leq C_2d^{-\beta}(x)\qquad\text{ for all \(x\) in }\Omega, \] where \(C_1,C_2,\beta\) are positive constants and \(d(x)\) is the distance from \(x\) to \(\partial\Omega\). The authors obtain the following result: Theorem. Let \(0<\beta<k+1\) and \(\Omega\) be a bounded, smooth and strictly convex domain of \({\mathbb R}^n\) with \(n\geq 2\). \begin{itemize} \item[(1)] If \(p>k\) there exists a unique \(k\)-convex large solution \(u\in C^2(\Omega)\) of (1). Moreover there exist positive constants \(c_1,c_2\) such that \[ c_1d^{-\alpha}(x)\leq u(x)\leq c_2d^{-\alpha}(x)\qquad\text{ for all \(x\) in }\Omega, \] where \(\alpha=\frac{k+1-\beta}{p-k}\). \item[(2)] If \(0<p\leq k\) there exists no nonnegative \(k\)-convex large solution \(u\in C^2(\Omega)\) of (1). \end{itemize}
