The authors study the existence of nontrivial \(2\pi\)-periodic solutions of asymptotically linear Hamiltonian systems \(\dot z=JH'(z,t)\), \(z\in \mathbb{R}^{2N}\), where \(J\) is the standard symplectic matrix, \(H\in C^2 (\mathbb{R}^{2N} \times\mathbb{R}, \mathbb{R})\) is \(2\pi\)-periodic in \(t\), \(H'\) denotes the gradient of \(H\) with respect to \(z\in\mathbb{R}^{2N}\). Under some hypotheses on \(H\) the authors show that the above systems have at least one or at least two nontrivial \(2\pi\)-periodic solutions. The main technics of proof are based on an infinite dimensional cohomology theory and a corresponding Morse theory constructed by the first author and \textit{W. Kryszewski} [Trans. Am. Math. Soc. 349, 3181-3234 (1997; Zbl 0892.58015)].
