The central results of this paper concern the extension to large classes of noncommutative rings of three of the key homological theorems in the theory of a commutative Noetherian local ring \(A\), namely the Auslander-Buchsbaum formula, Bass's theorem on the equality of the injective dimension of a finitely generated module of finite injective dimension with the depth of \(A\), and the No-holes theorem. Versions of these are obtained for \(AS\)-Gorenstein algebras of finite injective dimension, which are either FBN or semilocal. The proofs use the existence of prebalanced dualizing complexes for such algebras. Since the hypotheses on \(A\) are satisfied by any Noetherian affine PI Hopf algebra \(H\) with finite right and left injective dimension, thanks to \textit{K. A. Brown} and \textit{K. R. Goodearl} [J. Algebra 198, No. 1, 240-265 (1997; Zbl 0892.16022)], it is clearly of interest to determine whether every Noetherian affine PI Hopf algebra \(H\) does have finite injective dimension, as asked by the reviewer [in Trends in the representation theory of finite-dimensional algebras, Contemp. Math. 229, 49-79 (1998; Zbl 0926.16028)]. In the final part of this paper the authors give an affirmative answer to this question in the case when \(H\) is a finite module over its centre. In more recent work, [\textit{Q.-S. Wu} and \textit{J. J. Zhang}, Noetherian PI Hopf algebras are Gorenstein, preprint (2002)], this conclusion has been extended to all Noetherian affine PI Hopf algebras.
