[The presentation of this version of the paper was flawed by a number of serious conversion errors on the part of Elsevier Science. Therefore the whole paper is published again in ibid. 241, 207-233 (2001; Zbl 0994.52004). The review below is given with some small corrections by the editor from Zentralblatt.] The author gives an extensive account of the topological Tverberg theorem following a manuscript of \textit{K. S. Sarkaria} [Pac. J. Math. 196, No. 1, 231-241 (2000; Zbl 1045.55002)]. The author presents a proof of the topological Tverberg theorem for \(q\) a prime power as follows. Let \(d\geq 1\) and \(q=p^k\) be two natural numbers where \(p\) is a prime number and \(k\geq 1\), and set \(N:=(q-1)(d+1)\). For any continuous map \(f:\Delta ^N \rightarrow\mathbb{R}^d\) of the standard \(N\)-simplex to \(\mathbb{R}^d\) there are \(q\) disjoint faces \(\sigma _1 ,\ldots , \sigma _q \subset \Delta ^N \) such that the intersection \(f(\sigma _1)\cap\cdots\cap f(\sigma _q)\) is non-empty. Because all known proofs use difficult methods from algebraic topology, the author's objective is to explain the proof for a wide mathematical audience.
