The fine topology of classical potential theory is the coarsest topology on \(\mathbb{R}^{n}\) with respect to which all superharmonic functions are continuous. Since the 1970s, Fuglede has played a central role in developing potential theory on fine domains. Fine potential theory has proved both insightful and useful for resolving problems in the classical theory. However, an obvious gap in this literature has concerned how one might create a Martin boundary theory for such domains. This is rectified in the present paper, which is the first in a sequence of three papers by the authors on the topic. They construct the Martin compactification of a fine domain \(U\), which leads to an integral representation for positive finely superharmonic functions on \(U\). They also prove a Fatou-Naïm-Doob theorem concerning the limiting behaviour of the quotient of two positive finely superharmonic functions at the Martin boundary.
