For ring \(R\) with center \(Z\) let \(D,T\colon R\to R\) so that for all \(x,y\in R\), \(D(x+y)-D(x)-D(y), D(xy)-D(x)y-xD(y)\in Z\) and \(T(x+y)-T(x)-T(y), T(xy)-T(x)T(y)\in Z\). A sample of the authors' results about such maps is: when \(R\) contains no nonzero central ideal then \(D\) and \(T\) are additive, and if also \(R\) is semiprime then \(D\) is a derivation and \(T\) is multiplicative; if \(Z\) has no nonzero nilpotents then \(D(Z),T(Z)\subseteq Z\); if \(R\) is a prime ring and \(D(0)\neq 0\) or \(T(0)\neq 0\) then \(R\) must be commutative; if \(R\) is semiprime and if for all \(x,y\in R\), \([x,y]=[D(x),D(y)]\) and if \(R\) has no nonzero nilpotents or if \([x,D(x)]\in Z\) for all \(x\in R\), then \(R\) is commutative.
