Finite groups in which the degrees of the non-linear irreducible characters are distinct and finite groups whose same degree characters are Galois conjugate have been classified by Berkovich-Chillag-Herzog resp. Dolfi-Navarro-Tiep in earlier work; in the paper under review the authors extend this by classifying the finite groups whose non-linear irreducible characters that are not conjugate under the natural Galois action have distinct degrees. The authors observe that for nonsolvable groups, the groups they study in this paper coincide with the groups in the Dolfi-Navarro-Tiep paper, but they differ greatly for nilpotent groups. The proof depends on CFSG.
