Let \(G\) be a compact Lie group and \(U\) and \(V\) be finite-dimensional real \(G\)-modules with the fixed-point space \(V^G =\{0\}\). A theorem of Marzantowicz, de Mattos and dos Santos [\textit{W. Marzantowicz} et al., J. Fixed Point Theory Appl. 19, No. 2, 1427--1437 (2017; Zbl 1379.55002)] estimates the covering dimension of the zero-set of a \(G\)-equivariant map from the unit sphere in \(U\) to \(V\) when \(G\) is an elementary abelian \(p\)-group for some prime \(p\) or a torus. In the paper under review, the author uses the classical Borsuk-Ulam theorem to give a refinement of their result estimating the dimension of that part of the zero-set on which an elementary abelian \(p\)-group \(G\) acts freely or a torus \(G\) acts with finite isotropy groups. The author also develops an analogous theory for actions of a torus and extends a Borsuk-Ulam theorem for circle actions due to Fadell, Husseini and Rabinowitz [\textit{E. R. Fadell} et al., Trans. Am. Math. Soc. 274, 345--360 (1982; Zbl 0506.58010)] to more general torus actions.
