\textit{U. Haagerup} first introduced the Haagerup property for groups in [Invent. Math. 50, 279--293 (1979; Zbl 0408.46046)], as a weaker version of amenability. This concept was generalized to finite von Neumann algebras [\textit{M. Choda}, Proc. Japan Acad., Ser. A 59, 174--177 (1983; Zbl 0523.46038); \textit{P. Jolissaint}, J. Oper. Theory 48, No. 3, 549--571 (2002; Zbl 1029.46091)]. Recently, the Haagerup property was generalized to arbitrary von Neumann algebras and locally compact quantum groups. On the other hand, it is important to consider relative properties. Hence, \textit{F. Boca} [Pac. J. Math. 161, No. 2, 201--231 (1993; Zbl 0795.46044)] introduced the relative Haagerup property for finite von Neumann algebras. In this paper, the authors focus on the relative Haagerup property for a unital, expected inclusion of arbitrary von Neumann algebras. They first define the relative Haagerup property in terms of a fixed faithful normal state, but then show that it is independent of the choice of the state and depends only on the conditional expectation in question. In the case of a finite von Neumann subalgebra, the notion does not depend on the choice of the corresponding conditional expectation. In particular, if the smaller algebra is finite-dimensional, the relative Haagerup property is equivalent to the Haagerup property of the larger algebra. As an important application, they show that the Haagerup property is stable under taking free products with amalgamation over finite-dimensional subalgebras.
