Let \((R,\mathfrak{m})\) denote a regular local ring of prime characteristic. In their paper [Dimension projective finie et cohomologie locale. Paris: Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (1971; Zbl 0227.13003)] \textit{C. Peskine} and \textit{L. Szpiro} have shown that \(H^i_I(R) = 0\) for all \( i > \dim R - \operatorname{depth} R/I\). This follows by the use of the Frobenius endomorphism. In the present paper the authors generalize this result for any regular local ring replacing the Frobenius endomorhism by a certain ring endomorphism \(\phi: R \to R\). They use their results in order to show that under certain additional assumptions set-theoretically Cohen-Macaulay ideals are the same as cohomologically complete intersections, i.e. \(\operatorname{height} I = \operatorname{cd} I\), where \(\operatorname{cd} I\) denotes the cohomological dimension. In a final section they use their results for an application to linkage.
