The authors work over the complex numbers; they consider the Grassmannian \(G_{3,7}\) of three-dimensional subspaces in a seven dimensional vector space, together with the respective Plücker embedding in projective space. Their aim is to study the geometry of the GIT quotient of \(G_{3,7}\) with respect to the diagonal maximal torus of \(\mathrm{SL}_7\). First, the line bundle \(\mathcal{L}(7\omega_3)\), obtained by twisting the line bundle \(\mathcal{L}(\omega_3)\) coming from the Plücker embedding, is considered. It is known that such a bundle descends to a line bundle on the GIT quotient; the first main result of this paper is that the quotient is projectively normal for this polarization. A second main result is a bijection between \(T\)-invariant monomials (in the coordinate ring of the Grassmannian \(G_{r,n}\)) and unions of lattice points of pointed cones; this is achieved by computing the Hilbert bases of certain polyhedral cones. Finally, the authors initiate the study of a more general object, namely GIT quotients (with respect to a maximal torus) of partial flag varieties. The first case, which is completely described in this paper, is the study of the torus quotient of \(\mathrm{SL}_5/Q\), where \(Q\) is the intersection of two maximal parabolic subgroups.
