This paper deals with the algebras of complex-valued continuous functions on topological spaces, Stein algebras, and commutative unital Banach algebras and their Hermiteness and projective freeness. Several necessary and sufficient conditions for the fulfillment of these properties of the algebra \(C(X)\) are stated, where \(X\) is a topological space. It is proved in particular that projective freeness and Hermiteness of a complex unital commutative Banach algebra \(A\) is equivalent to these two properties for \(C(M(A))\), where \(M(A)\) stands here for the maximal ideal space of \(A\). The authors introduce also the class \(\mathcal C\) of commutative unital complex Banach algebras including finitely generated algebras of symmetric functions, Bohr-Wiener algebras, algebras of holomorphic semi-almost periodic functions as well as the algebras of bounded holomorphic functions on Riemann surfaces. \(\mathcal C\) is a class of projective free Banach algebras such that their projective tensor product with projective free or Hermite Banach algebras continues to be projective free or Hermite, respectively.
