In this paper, the authors investigate the so-called André/Bruck-Bose representation of certain \(\mathbb{F}_q\)-linear sets contained in a line of \(\mathrm{PG}(2,q^t)\). Linear sets are particular point sets in a finite projective space and, in the last years, they interest is gained for their connections and applications in coding theory. The authors show that scattered \(\mathbb{F}_q\)-linear sets i.e., linear sets whose points are weight one, of rank \(3\) in \(\mathrm{PG}(1,q^3)\) correspond to particular hyperbolic quadrics and that \(\mathbb{F}_q\)-linear clubs i.e., linear set whose points except the head point have weight one, in \(\mathrm{PG}(1, q^t)\) are linked to subspaces of a certain design based on normal rational curves. Finally, they use these results to construct optimal higgledy-piggledy arrangement of seven planes in \(\mathrm{PG}(5, q)\) answering an open problem contained in [\textit{L. Denaux}, Electron. J. Comb. 29, No. 3, Research Paper P3.29, 25 p. (2022; Zbl 1494.51003)].
