The author considers the virtual element method for the modified transmission eigenvalue problem. The eigenvalue problem arises in inverse scattering theory for artificial inhomogeneous media characterized as a metamaterial. Error estimates are provided. The correct spectral approximation and the optimal convergence rate are proved. In the numerical tests, direct and inverse spectral problems are presented to demonstrate the theoretical analysis.
