Quasi-abelian categories are a class of self-dual additive categories containing, for example, abelian categories, category of Banach spaces, category of Fréchet spaces, category of locally convex spaces, among others. These categories are exactly the cotilting torsionfree class in an abelian category, and such ambient abelian category is ``essentially'' unique. Moreover, given a quasi-abelian category \(\mathcal{E}\), \textit{J.-P. Schneiders} in [Mém. Soc. Math. Fr., Nouv. Sér. 76, 1--140 (1998; Zbl 0926.18004)] proved that the ambient abelian category of \(\mathcal{E}\) is the heart of a t-structure of the derived category \(D^b(\mathcal{E})\). Still in [Mém. Soc. Math. Fr., Nouv. Sér. 76, 1--140 (1998; Zbl 0926.18004)], \textit{J.-P. Schneiders} shows that the ambient abelian category of a quasi-abelian category \(\mathcal{E}\) can also be recovered as the localisation of the monomorphism category of \(\mathcal{E}\) with respect to the bicartesian squares. The main goal of the paper under review is to generalise these results for additive regular categories. As the authors show every full subcategory of an abelian category which is closed under subobjects is additive regular, and every additive regular category is closed under subobjects in their ambient abelian category (whose existence is established by the authors). To generalise these results from quasi-abelian categories to additive regular categories, the study of t-structures of derived categories of exact structures in not sufficient. Indeed, derived categories of ``one-sided exact'' categories are the correct framework to construct the ambient abelian categories of additive regular categories. In addition, the authors show that the extension closure of an additive regular category \(\mathcal{E}\) in the derived category \(D^b(\mathcal{E})\) is again additive regular (this is usually not the case for quasi-abelian categories \(\mathcal{E}\)). The authors recover the main result of [\textit{S.-A. Wegner}, J. Pure Appl. Algebra 221, No. 11, 2880--2909 (2017; Zbl 1377.46053)] applied to additive regular categories by establishing that the ambient abelian category of an additive regular category \(\mathcal{E}\) is also the localisation of the category of monomorphisms in \(\mathcal{E}\) (up to homotopy). The authors construction builds upon the work [\textit{W. Rump}, Cah. Topologie Géom. Différ. Catégoriques 42, No. 3, 163--225 (2001; Zbl 1004.18009)] and the use of Auslander's formula.
