The global solvability of nonlinear evolution equations with initial conditions has been an important problem for both physicists and mathematicians. In the present paper, the author shows that a certain Cauchy problem for the semi-infinite Toda lattice is uniquely solvable. Moreover, it is shown that the inverse scattering method is applicable in this case where the second order difference operator associated to the Toda lattice is a Hilbert-Schmidt operator.
