It is well-known that for a compact space \(X\), the Banach space \(C(X)\) is Asplund if and only if \(X\) is scattered. In this paper, the authors generalize this result for the space of all real valued continuous functions endowed with the compact-open topology, namely, \(C_k(X)\), for some suitable choice of Tychonoff space \(X\). A space is called almost \(\omega\)-bounded if for any sequence \(\{G_n \ : \ n\in \omega\}\) of nonempty \(G_\delta\)-subsets of \(X\) there are points \(y_n \in G_n\) (\(n\in \omega\)) such that the countable set \(\{y_n \ : \ n\in \omega\}\) is relatively compact in \(X\). It is proved that for an almost \(\omega\)-bounded space \(X\), \(C_k(X)\) is Asplund if and only if \(X\) is scattered. It is also proved that for a pseudocompact space \(X\), if the strong dual of \(C_k(X)\) is \(\omega^*\)-binormal, then \(X\) is a \(\Delta\)-space. The paper contains the interrelations among compactness, countable compactness, \(\omega\)-boundedness, almost \(\omega\)-boundedness and Warner boundedness and plenty of non-trivial examples are given to establish that the converse implications do not hold in general. The article is well written and self-contained. The open questions (some of which are already proved for a special class of spaces), posed towards the end of this article, are also useful to researchers working in this field.
