Let $G$ be an arbitrary finite group and $\varphi$ an irreducible Brauer character of $G$ with respect to a prime number $p$. Then, it is said that $\varphi$ has a lift if there exists an irreducible ordinary (complex) character $\chi\in{\mathrm{Irr}}(G)$ of $G$ such that $\chi =\varphi$ on $p'$-elements of $G$. In general, a Brauer character need not have a lift. However, it is well known that if $G$ is $p$-solvable, every irreducible Brauer character of $G$ lifts to an ordinary character. The fact is called Fong-Swan's theorem due to P.~Fong and R.~Swan. Now, let $G$ be a finite $p$-solvable group. For $\chi\in{\mathrm{Irr}}(G)$, a pair $(Q,\delta)$ associated to $\chi$ is introduced by \textit{G. Navarro} [Trans. Am. Math. Soc. 354, No. 7, 2759--2773 (2002; Zbl 0998.20012)], that is uniquely defined up to $G$-conjugacy where $Q$ is a $p$-subgroup of $G$ and $\delta\in{\mathrm{Irr}}(Q)$. The authors of the paper under review call the pair a \textit{Navarro vertex} for $\chi$ and it is called linear if $\delta(1)=1$. The notion a vertex goes back to J. A.~Green. A part of the main results of this paper claims such as: Suppose that $G$ is a finite solvable group and $\chi\in{\mathrm{Irr}}(G)$ is a lift of some irreducible $2$-Brauer character $\varphi$. Then, $\chi$ has a linear Navarro vertex if and only if every primitive character inducing $\chi$ has odd degree and his vertex theory says that for any finitely generated indecomposable $FG$-module, its vertex is defined up to $G$-conjugacy where $F$ is a field of characteristic $p$ and the vertex is a $p$-subgroup of $G$.
