The authors apply the Jordan-Kinderlehrer-Otto variational scheme [\textit{R. Jordan} et al., SIAM J. Math. Anal. 29, No. 1, 1--17 (1998; Zbl 0915.35120)] stemming from optimal transportation theory to a parabolic-elliptic chemotaxis system with either birth or death reaction terms. They illustrate these considerations for a system with no mass conservations with numerical simulations. Finally, they derive a sufficient condition for finite time blowup of radially symmetric solutions.
