The author classifies unital monomorphisms into certain simple \(\mathcal Z\)-stable \(C^*\)-algebras up to approximate unitary equivalence. The target algebra is not assumed to have many nontrivial projections and real rank zero. The two target algebra classes \(C, C^{\prime}\) are introduced in this paper as follows. The Jiang-Su algebra \(\mathcal Z\) was introduced by \textit{X.-H. Jiang} and \textit{H.-B. Su} [Am. J. Math. 121, No.~2, 359--413 (1999; Zbl 0923.46069)]. It is a unital, simple, separable, infinite-dimensional, stable finite and nuclear \(C^*\)-algebra which is KK-equivalent to \({\mathbb C}\). A \(C^*\)-algebra \(A\) is said to be \({\mathcal Z}\)-stable if \(A\otimes {\mathcal Z}\) is isomorphic to \(A\). Let \(Q\) be a UHF algebra with \(K_0(Q)={\mathbb Q}\). Let \(\tau\) be the class of all infinite-dimensional unital separable \(C^*\)-algebras with tracial rank zero. Let \(\tau^{\prime}\) be the class of infinite-dimensional unital simple separable exact \(C^*\)-algebras with real rank zero, stable rank one, weakly unperforated \(K_0\)-group and finitely many extremal tracial states. Let \(C\) be the class of unital simple separable \({\mathcal Z}\)-stable \(C^*\)-algebras \(A\) such that \(A\otimes Q\) is in \(\tau\). Let \(C^{\prime}\) be the class of unital simple separate traces and whose extremal traces are finitely many. A new invariant \(\Theta_{\phi,\psi}: K_1(C)\rightarrow \text{Aff}(T(A))/\text{Ran} D_A\) is introduced for the case that the target \(C^*\)-algebra is not of real rank zero. The main theorem is as follows. Let \(X\) be a compact metrizable space and let \(A\in C\cup C^{\prime}\). For unital monomorphisms \(\phi, \psi:C(X)\rightarrow A\), \(\phi\) and \(\psi\) are approximately unitarily equivalent if and only if \(KL(\phi)=KL(\psi)\), \(\tau\circ \phi=\tau\circ \psi\) for all \(\tau\in T(A)\), and \(\text{Ran}\,\Theta_{\phi,\psi}\subset \overline{\text{Ran}\, D_A}\). When the domain algebra of the monomorphisms is a nuclear \(C^*\)-algebra in \(C\) satisfying the UCT, the main result also holds.
