The author of this paper studies the vector-valued singular Volterra integral equation \[ x(t) = a(t) + \int_0^t B(t,s) x(s)\, ds, \] where \(B\) is a weakly singular \(n \times n\)-dimensional matrix kernel and \(a\) is a continuous \(n\)-dimensional vector function. Here the weak singularity of \(B\) means that \(B\) is allowed to be unbounded, but for each \(t\) the function \(s \mapsto B(t,s)\) has at most a finite number of discrete discontinuities in the interval \([0,t]\), the integral \(\int_0^t \left\| B(t,s) \right\| \, ds\) is continuous, and for each continuous function \(\varphi\) the integral \(\int_0^t B(t,s) \varphi(s) \, ds\) is continuous. A number of results are proved about the validity of the resolvent formula \[ x(t) = a(t) - \int_0^t R(t,s) a(s) \, ds, \] where \(R\) is the standard (Volterra type) resolvent of \(B\). Many of these results can also be derived from the corresponding results for the class of kernels of continuous type given in Chapter 9 of the book by \textit{G. Gripenberg, S.-O. Londen} and \textit{O. Staffans} [Volterra Integral and Functional Equations. Encyclopedia of Mathematics and Its Applications, 34. Cambridge etc.: Cambridge University Press (1990; Zbl 0695.45002)].
