Let \(L\) be a closed subspace of a Banach space \(X\). The subspace \(L\) is called \(w^*\)-\textit{extensible} in \(X\) if every \(w^*\)-null sequence in \(L^*\) contains a subsequence that can be extended to a \(w^*\)-null sequence in \(X^*\). A~Banach space \(X\) is called \(w^*\)-\textit{extensible} if every closed linear subspace of \(X\) is \(w^*\)-extensible in \(X\). The notion of \(w^*\)-extensibility was explicitly introduced in [\textit{B. S. Mordukhovich} and \textit{B.-W. Wang}, Int. J. Math. Math. Sci. 50, No.~49--52, 2653--2680 (2004; Zbl 1063.49018)] when studying restrictive metric regularity in variational analysis. In the paper under review, some properties of \(w^*\)-extensible subspaces and \(w^*\)-extensible spaces are presented. It is well known that a Banach space with \(w^*\)-sequential by compact dual unit ball is \(w^*\)-extensible. The authors pose the following problems: Does every \(w^*\)-extensible space have a \(w^*\)-sequential by compact dual unit ball? Is the \(w^*\)-extensibility a 3-space property? Reviewer's remark. The answer to the second question is negative [\textit{J. M. F. Castillo, M. González} and \textit{P. L. Papini}, ``On weak* extensible Banach spaces'' (in preparation)].
