The finite element approximation of harmonic functions satisfying a boundary value problem in two space dimensions is presented. The solution satisfies minimality properties. Triangular meshes are used together with linear elements on each subregion. Second order error estimates are derived where the constants only depend on the second order derivatives of the solution. An alternative boundary value problem is introduced in the complex plane using the parallel slit mapping. The approximations can then be obtained using finite elements together with Schwarz's alternative method. Numerical applications show results for a vertical slit domain using the Schwarz-Christoffel transformation and the exterior domain of multi-element airfoils, using the Karman-Trefftz transformation.
