The authors consider the fractional porous medium equations \[ (-\Delta v)^\sigma + \left(v^\frac{1}{m}\right)_{\!t} =0, \] where \(\frac {n-2\sigma}{n+2\sigma}<m<1\). They prove local Hölder estimates for non-negative solutions of this singular equation. They use a recent result due to \textit{L. Caffarelli} and \textit{L. Silvestre} [Commun. Partial Differ. Equations 32, No. 8, 1245--1260 (2007; Zbl 1143.26002)] that allows them to consider the operator \((-\Delta )^\sigma\) as the normal derivative of some extension \(v^{\ast}\) of \(v\) to the upper half space. Thanks to this result, \(v\) is regarded as boundary value of \(v^{\ast}\). Therefore, the local Hölder estimate of \(v\) can be obtained by the same regularity of \(v^{\ast}\). The authors use these results to analyze the behavior of solutions of the non-local fast diffusion equation near the extinction time.
