Let \(G\) be a group. A \(G\)-category (or a \(G\)-action) consists in a pair \((\mathcal{C},A)\), where \(\mathcal{C}\) is a \(k\)-linear category, \(k\) a commutative ring, and \(A:G\to \mathrm{Aut}(\mathcal{C})\) is a group homomorphism. In this paper the author studies the orbit category \(\mathcal{C}/G\) of a \(G\)-category (see Definition 2.1) via the notion of \(G\)-covering functor. The main result in this direction is Theorem 2.9 which provides a characterization of \(G\)-invariant functors \(\mathcal{C}\to\mathcal{C}'\) which are \(G\)-covering by the existence of some equivalences \(\mathcal{C}/G\to \mathcal{C}'\). This is used, together with other interesting results to prove the main result of the paper: if \(R\) is a category with a \(G\)-action such that there is a \(G\)-stable tilting subcategory \(E\) for \(R\) then \(R/G\) and \(E/G\) are derived equivalent (Theorem 4.7). The paper contains also generalizations of some results proved by \textit{C. Cibils} and \textit{E. N. Marcos} [Proc. Am. Math. Soc. 134, No. 1, 39--50 (2006; Zbl 1098.18002)] (Section 5 and Section 6), a method to compute the first orbit category using quivers and relations (Section 8), and some interesting examples (Section 9).
