A Banach space \(X\) is said to be extremely non-complex if the norm equality \(\|\text{Id} +T^2\| = 1 + \|T^2\|\) holds true for every bounded linear operator \(T: X \to X\). The existence of such spaces was demonstrated recently by \textit{P. Koszmider, M. Martín} and \textit{J. Merí} in [J. Math. Anal. Appl. 350, No. 2, 601--615 (2009; Zbl 1162.46016)]. Two major questions about these spaces are whether all extremely non-complex spaces have numerical index 1, and whether all of them possess the Daugavet property. The authors present two results related to these open questions. Namely, they show that every extremely non-complex Banach space has positive numerical index, and that the infimum of the diameters of the slices of its unit ball is positive. Apart from this, the authors prove that an extremely non-complex Banach space does not have an unconditional basis.
