Muhammad ibn Mūsā al-Khwārizmī is widely regarded as one of the most prominent medieval Arabic mathematicians. His reputation is primarily based on the profound influence of three books he authored in Baghdad during the first half of the 3rd century AH (9th century CE) on arithmetic, algebra, and astronomical tables. These works were extensively studied, copied, modified, translated, and commented upon over the centuries in Arabic, Latin, Hebrew, and various European languages. This paper explores the impact of al-Khwārizmī's Kitāb al-jabr wa-l-muqābala (The Book of Algebra) on the development of algebra. The author traces the influence of al-Khwārizmī's Kitāb al-jabr wa-l-muqābala (henceforth referred to as Algebra) within the textual tradition it established over eight centuries and across three continents. Al-Khwārizmī's importance in the history of algebra is unquestionable, not only because his work served as a model for later Arabic texts but also due to its resurgence in the 12th century CE after being translated into Latin. There, it became a foundational text in the evolution of European algebra.\N\NFor the entire collection see [Zbl 1531.01004].
