This paper considers a collection of integrable and non-integrable birational mappings of order higher than two. The authors show that the usual methods for calculating the degree growth of second-order mappings can be extended to higher-order systems. The rationale for the authors' approach is to observe that integrability depends on the slow growth of some characteristic. For birational mappings a natural choice for this characteristic is the degree growth of the iterates of the mapping as rational functions of the initial conditions. It was \textit{R. Halburd} [Proc. R. Soc. Lond., A, Math. Phys. Eng. Sci. 473, No. 2201, Article ID 20160831, 13 p. (2017; Zbl 1404.39020)] who proposed methods to obtain the degree growth. They note particularly that Halburd's method (described in [loc. cit.]) works very well in higher order cases. This technique enables the explicit determination of the degree growth of a second-order mapping by analyzing the patterns of its singularities.\N\NThe authors also suggest that, to effectively apply their approach, it is preferable to select initial conditions specifically adapted to their method.
