The aim of this paper is to explore the parameter space of a heterotic string compactification realising four-dimensional Minkowski spacetime with minimal supersymmetry in the large radius limit. Large radius refers to a region in the moduli space where all curvatures, when measured using a suitable length scale, are small. The authors consider \(N=1\), \(d=4\) vacua of heterotic theories in the large radius limit in which \(\alpha^\backprime\ll1\). Note that \(\alpha^\backprime\) serves as the coupling constant for the sigma model, it dictates the number of loops involved in calculating the beta function. The role of \(\alpha^\backprime\)-corrections, or quantum corrections, are important physically and mathematically. The advantage of the formulation considered here is that supersymmetry is directly related to the differential geometry of the underlying geometry of the string compactification. The geometry is non-Kähler and yet has a Kähler parameter space, which by itself is mathematically surprising. The authors construct a real differential operator \(\mathcal{D}=D+\overline{D}\) on an extension bundle \((\mathcal{Q},\mathcal{D})\) with underlying topology \(\mathcal{Q}=(T^{1,0}X)^*\oplus\mbox{ End }E\oplus T^{1,0}X\) whose curvature is holomorphic and hermitian-Yang-Mills with respect to the complex structure and metric on the underlying non-Kähler complex 3-fold \(X\) if and only if the heterotic supersymmetry equations and Bianchi identity are satisfied. This is suggestive of an analogue of the Donaldson-Uhlenbeck-Yau correspondence for heterotic vacua of this type. \N\NThis paper is organized as follows: The first section is an introduction to the subject. The second section deals with the extension bundle \(\mathcal{Q}\), the \(\overline{D}\)-operator and supersymmetry. The third section is devoted to a \(D\)-operator. The fourth section deals with the heterotic hermitian-Yang-Mills correspondence. Here the authors consider the operator \(\mathcal{D}=D+\overline{D}\) and compute its curvature. The fifth section concerns some remarks and conclusions to the results. The paper is supported by appendices concerning heterotic supergravity, identities from complex geometry and the trace of the curvature of \(\mathcal{D}\).
