    The paper studies the problem \[ u'(t)=Au(t)+f(t),\quad t\in\mathbb R, \tag{1} \] where \(A\) is a closed operator in a complex Banach space \(X\). For \(1\leq p<\infty\), the author defines that problem (1) is \((W^{1,p},L^p)\)-mildly well-posed, if there exists a bounded linear operator \({\mathcal B}\) on \(L^p(\mathbb R;X)\) such that \({\mathcal B}\) also maps \(W^{1,p}(\mathbb R;X)\cap L^p(\mathbb R;D(A))\) continuously into itself, and \[ {\mathcal BA}u={\mathcal AB}u=u,\quad u\in W^{1,p}(\mathbb R;X)\cap L^p(\mathbb R;D(A)). \] Here, \({\mathcal A}\) is defined by \({\mathcal A}u=u'-Au\) and \(D(A)\) is a Banach space equipped with the graph norm. The paper provides the following characterization: problem (1) is \((W^{1,p},L^p)\)-mildly well-posed if and only if \(i\mathbb R\subset \rho(A)\) and the function \(m(\cdot)\) given by \(m(x)=(ix-A)^{-1}\) defines an \(L^p\)-multiplier.
