Given a subclass \({\mathcal M}\) of all monomorphisms in a category there are three different notions in the literature for calling a morphism \(m\in{\mathcal M}\) essential. The three notions coincide if \({\mathcal M}\) is the class of all monomorphisms. The main contribution of this paper is to provide another interesting class \({\mathcal M}_d\) for which the three notions also coincide. This is the class \({\mathcal M}_d\) of sequentially dense monomorphisms which was first defined and studied by Giuli, Ebrahimi and Mahmoudi for projection algebras. Projection algebras and projection spaces have been introduced by Herrlich, Ehrig and others in order to model algebraic data types and process specifications in Computer Science. Projection algebras can be considered as acts over a special infinite monoid, but in this paper acts over a general semigroup are studied. In addition to the main contribution mentioned above the paper provides a characterization of the \({\mathcal M}_d\)-essential extensions. Unfortunately, no examples are given in the paper for the main definitions and results and it is open whether there are interesting applications to projection algebras, which have motivated the study of the class \(M_d\).
