The paper is devoted to the interplay between the smoothness properties of a function and the behavior of the Fourier transforms/coefficients. More specifically, upper and lower estimates of the Fourier transform/coefficient via the corresponding modulus of smoothness are obtained. In certain cases, these estimates coincide. That the obtained estimates are sharp, one can see for functions satisfying certain monotonicity properties. Interesting results are obtained for the case of radial functions. Numerous applications are given.
