This article is deeply related to a result by \textit{A. Dimca} and \textit{A. Suciu} [J. Eur. Math. Soc. (JEMS) 11, No. 3, 521--528 (2009; Zbl 1217.57011)] on the relationship between the fundamental groups of closed Kähler manifolds and that of closed 3-manifolds. Though this kind of groups have mainly been studied based on the Thurston approach to 3-manifolds, the proof given by Dimca and Suciu does not follow such an outline and makes little use of this approach. The author analyzed their treatment of the positive Betti number case and succeeded showing that any group \(\Gamma\) with \(b_1(\Gamma)>0\) whose real cohomology algebra \(H^*(\Gamma; \mathbb{R})\) satisfies 3-dimensional oriented Poincaré duality can not be the fundamental group of a closed Kähler manifold (Theorem 1.4). Applying this theorem, the author gives a quick proof of the result by Dimca and Suciu. The author also shows that a group that is both the fundamental group of a closed 3-manifolds and of a non-Kähler compact surface is \(\mathbb{Z}\) or \(\mathbb{Z}\oplus\mathbb{Z}_2\) (Theorem 1.6) by applying the Kodaira classification.
