The paper deals with the nonlinear beam equation on the \(d\)-dimensional torus \[ u_{tt}+\Delta^2u+mu+G_u(x,u), \] where \(G(x,u)=u^4+O(u^5)\) and \(m\in [1,2]\). A KAM theorem for small amplitude solutions is obtained. The equation can be represented as a Hamiltonian system with variables \(u\) and \(v=u_t\). It is shown that, for a generic \(m\), many of small amplitude invariant finite dimensional tori of the linear equation (\(G=0\)) persist as invariant tori of the nonlinear equation. Such tori are filled in with quasiperiodic in time solutions. In dimension \(d\geq 2\) not all the persistent tori are linearly stable, and explicit examples of partially hyperbolic invariant tori are constructed. The unstable tori are located in a neighborhood of the origin and create some local instabilities. The paper consists of Introduction and four parts. Part I contains general preliminary material. Part II is devoted to the Birkhoff normal form, while Part III contains a result of KAM type. In Part IV the author prove the main result of the paper making use of main theorems of Parts II and III.
