Let \(G_m(\mathbb{B})\) be the set of continuous functions from \(\mathbb R^m\) to \(\mathbb R\) with support in the unit ball, non-negative Fourier transform, and satisfying \(f(0)=1\). The author investigates the supremum over all such functions of averages of the functions over spheres of radius \(a\), where \(0 < a <1\): \[ \sup_{f \in G_m(\mathbb{B})} \frac{\left| \int_{|x| =a } f(x) dx\right|}{ \int_{|x|=a} dx }. \] The case \(m=1\) was investigated in a paper by \textit{R. P. Boas jun.} and \textit{M. Kac} [Duke Math. J. 12, 189--206 (1945; Zbl 0060.25602)]. There are four main results given: For \(m \geq 2\), it suffices to consider radial functions. For \(m \geq 3\), there exists a radial function for which the supremum is attained, which may be represented as the self-convolution of a radial function in \(L^2(\mathbb R^m)\) with support in the ball of radius 1/2 and \(L^2\) norm of 1. If \(m=3\) and \(1/2 \leq a < 1\), the value of the supremum is \((1-a)/(\pi a)\). If \(m=3\) and \(1/3 \leq a < 1/2\), the supremum is a solution to a given trigonometric equation.
