The discrete KdV equation (Volterra lattice equation) is an integrable Hamiltonian system in one discrete space variable and one continuous time variable. The single equation is a member of the discrete KdV hierarchy of commuting flows. The authors define the tau-function of the arbitrary solutions to the discrete KdV hierarchy, based on the matrix-resolvent approach. They compare this object with the tau-function of the solutions defined via reduction of the Toda lattice hierarchy. Explicit formulae for generating series of logarithmic derivatives of the tau-functions are obtained. These explicit formulae are used to enumerate ribbon graphs with even valencies and to evaluate certain special cubic Hodge integrals.
