Flag bundles \(Y\) over an algebraic manifold \(X\) are varieties endowed with a surjective morphism \(\pi: Y\to X\) whose fibers are isomorphic to a fixed quotient \(G/B\), where \(G\) is a semisimple complex algebraic group and \(B\) is a Borel subgroup. The structure of flag bundles over the projective line is simple and described by the tag, which is a sequence of nonnegative integers associated with the nodes of the Dynkin diagram of \(G\). When the underlying variety \(X\) is covered by rational curves, it is natural to extend the Horrocks analysis of the splitting of vector bundles over projective spaces, by looking at conditions for the triviality of flag bundles in terms of the tags of their restrictions to rational curves. The authors prove that if \(X\) is rationally chain connected with respect to unsplit families \(M_1,\dots,M_s\) of rational curves, then the flag bundle \(Y\) is trivial if and only if the tag of \(Y\) restricted to all curves of a family \(M_i\) is zero. The authors define uniform bundles as bundles whose restriction to all rational curves of a family that dominates \(X\) are isomorphic. Then the authors prove that over Fano manifolds \(X\) of Picard number one an irreducible uniform flag bundle has only \(0\) and \(1\) the tags of its restriction to rational curves. The authors also introduce the notion of diagonalizable flag bundles, and prove results connecting the diagonalizability of a bundle with the existence of sections of \(Y\to X\).
