The authors study pre-Riesz spaces. A pre-Riesz space \(X\) is generally an order dense ideal of some vector lattice \(Y\) called the cover of \(X\). Note that \(X\) is called pervasive if for every cover \(Y\) of \(X\) and every positive nonzero \(y\in Y\) there is a nonzero positive \(x\in X\) less than \(y\). The authors extend the basic properties of projection bands and atoms in vector lattices to pervasive pre-Riesz spaces.
