The paper gives a re-evaluation of the mathematical work of James Glenie. Starting from a biographical sketch and a short characterization of Glenie's mathematical environment, the paper offers a rather detailed description of Glenie's mathematical papers and achievements. The author explains the rooting of Glenie's mathematics in the Euclidean geometrical tradition, particularly the theory of proportions, as well as the fact that his continuing focus on this matter made Glenie an outsider regarding the mainstream mathematics of his days notwithstanding that his papers contain some interesting ideas and results.
