Let \(I\) denote a real interval with a non-empty interior. An \((n+1)\)-dimensional space \(E_n\subset C^n(I)\) is said to be an extended Chebyshev space on \(I\) if any non-zero element of \(E_n\) vanishes at most \(n\) times in \(I\), counting multiplicities as far as possible for \(C^n\) functions, that is, up to \((n+1)\). The problem of the possibility to construct Bernstein-type operators in any given extended Chebyshev space and their connection with blossoms is considered. This generalizes and explains a recent result by \textit{J. M. Aldaz, O. Kounchev} and \textit{H. Render} [Constr. Approx. 29, No.~3, 345--367 (2009; Zbl 1175.41019)] on exponential spaces. It is also indicated why such operators automatically possess interesting shape preserving properties and why similar operators exist in still more general frameworks. Moreover, the problem of convergence of infinite sequences of such operators is studied.
