Let \(N\) be a Riemannian manifold and denote by \(B_{N}(r)\) a geodesic ball of radius \(r\) in \(N\). Let \(M\) be a submanifold of \(N\) and \(H\) its mean curvature vector. In the paper under review, the authors prove that if \(M\) is complete and properly immersed into some geodesic ball \(B_{N}(r)\), then the spectrum of \(M\) is discrete, provided the norm of \(H\) is sufficiently small. As a byproduct, they answer a question of \textit{S. T. Yau} [Asian J. Math. 4, No. 1, 235--278 (2000; Zbl 1031.53004)]. More precisely, they prove that the spectrum of a complete minimal surface which is properly immersed into a ball of \({\mathbb R}^{3}\) is indeed discrete.
