Let \({\mathbb T}\) be the unit circle in \({\mathbb C}\) and let \({\mathcal B}\) be the \(C^*\)-subalgebra of \(B(L^2({\mathbb T}))\) generated by all operators of multiplication with piecewise continuous slowly oscillating functions, by the Cauchy singular integral operator and by the range of a unitary representation of an amenable group of orientation-preserving diffeomorphisms of \({\mathbb T}\) onto itself. The authors obtain an abstract Fredholm criterion for the operators in \({\mathcal B}\) by using a generalization of the local-trajectory method for studying \(C^*\)-algebras associated with \(C^*\)-dynamical systems.
