This paper proves the null controllability of a coupled Schrödinger-KdV system on an interval, i.e. in \(1+1\) dimensions. Even though there are three real-valued unknowns (the real and imaginary parts of the solution to Schrödinger's equation and the real-valued solution to the KdV equation), the control consists of only two real-valued functions: either one complex-valued control applied to the Schrödinger equation or two real-valued controls, one applied to the Schrödinger equation and the other applied to the KdV equation. The proof is based by duality on an observability inequality for the adjoint system. The authors first prove separate observability inequalities for the Schrödinger and KdV equations with a free parameter, then combine them and remove the undesirable terms from the right-hand side.
