    For a uniformly discrete subset \(\Lambda\) of a L.C.A. group \(G\) and a relatively compact subset \(\Omega\) of \(\widehat G\) let \(\mathcal B(\Omega)\) denote the subspace of functions in \(L^2(G)\) whose Fourier transform is supported in \(\Omega\). Necessary density conditions on \(\Lambda\) are given for being a set of sampling (i.e. \(|f|_2^2\leq C\sum_{\lambda\in\Lambda}|f(\lambda)|^2 \quad\forall f\in\mathcal B(\Omega)\)) or a set of interpolation (i.e., for \(\sum_{\lambda\in\Lambda}|a_\lambda|^2<\infty \) there is a \(f \in \mathcal B(\Omega)\) such that \(\hat f(\lambda)=a_\lambda\) \(\forall\lambda\in\Lambda\)). This extends classical estimates of \textit{H. J. Landau} [Acta Math. 117, 37--52 (1967; Zbl 0154.15301)].
